I-540 Triangle Expressway, Raleigh, NC

Client: State of North Carolina Department of Transportation (NC DOT), Flatiron/Branch Construction, Lane/Blythe Development (civil joint venture).

Project: This joint venture roadway expansion project continues the NC I-540 outer loop around Raleigh. This two-part project serves as a continuation of NCDOT’s first toll road. The design is both aesthetically pleasing and functional, including over 1.2 million square feet of sound walls with 5,161 posts. Every effort is being made to minimize disruption to local residents.

Partners: Lindsay Precast

Challenges: The expressway required 12 bridges as well as an on-site asphalt sub with a dedicated concrete batch plant. Other challenges included scheduling and winter rain.

Result: This project, also known as NC I-540 Triangle Expressway, is an ongoing project.
